What Is an AI Readiness Assessment?

An AI readiness assessment is a structured review of whether an organization's goals, data, systems, security, and team skills are ready to put AI into production. It starts with business problems, not models, and asks which use cases are worth solving and what each would return. It checks whether the data exists and is accessible, whether systems such as the ERP and CRM can be connected, and whether security and governance are in place. A good assessment ends with a prioritized list of use cases and a roadmap, and sometimes with the answer "not yet."

Who should get one?

Companies under board pressure to do something with AI, teams whose AI pilot demoed well and changed nothing, and leaders who can't pick a first use case all benefit. So do organizations worried about proprietary data reaching public models, and private equity firms comparing AI opportunities across a portfolio.

THE FRAMEWORK

What We Evaluate

Our AI readiness assessment framework looks at six areas, always against your real data, systems, and workflows.

  • Business goals and use cases

We identify where AI has the most potential for your priorities, then rank each use case by impact and difficulty. Every candidate gets the same test: if it works perfectly, does it pay for itself?

  • Data readiness

We check whether the data a use case needs exists, is accessible, and has good enough data quality. For language models, good enough is often lower than teams expect; perfect data is rarely the bar.

  • Systems and integration

We look at how AI would fit your current technology: the ERP, CRM, legacy databases, and APIs it must read from or act on, and where Model Context Protocol (MCP) connectors would be needed.

  • Security and governance

We review data privacy: where data would be processed, who can access it, and which actions need human approval, so AI is held to the same controls as the rest of your systems.

  • Build, buy, or extend

For each use case, we recommend whether to adopt an off-the-shelf product, extend a system you already run, or build something custom, and say plainly when AI isn't the answer.

  • Cost and ROI

We estimate the return on the success metrics that matter to you, along with running costs such as model tokens and cloud services, so the business case holds up after launch.

DELIVERABLES

What You Leave With

You receive a working prototype and the plan to take it further.

There's no obligation to continue: the roadmap is yours to act on with us, with another partner, or on your own.

  • Proof-of-concept demonstration

A working prototype of one high-impact use case, built for your scenario, so you see what the AI does before you commit to a build.

  • Feasibility analysis

An assessment of whether the use case can work with your current data, systems, and security requirements, and what would need to change.

  • Projected outcomes

An estimate of the expected return on the metrics you care about, so the business case rests on numbers, not enthusiasm.

  • Implementation roadmap

A roadmap covering the technical and organizational requirements to move from prototype to production, in the order that makes sense for you.

FORMATS

Assessment Formats

Assessments come in several formats, all part of JBS Dev's Quick Launch Lab program.

  • Generative AI Assessment

The Generative AI Assessment is a free-to-start evaluation and part of JBS Dev's Quick Launch Lab program. JBS Dev experts work with your team to identify the AI uses with the most potential, check whether your data infrastructure is ready, estimate returns, and plan how AI fits your current technology. We then build a proof of concept for one high-impact use case. You leave with a prototype demonstration, a feasibility analysis, projected outcomes, and an implementation roadmap.

  • AI Strategy Workshop

An AI strategy workshop is a conversation-first way to start. In a half-day AI workshop with JBS Dev's technical team, you bring a business challenge or goal and work through it together: where AI could help, the architecture and integration issues involved, what to build first, and how to budget for it. Sessions are tailored to your industry and objectives, and free for qualifying organizations. When you need a prototype, the Generative AI Assessment is the next step.

  • Technology Assessment

The Technology Assessment reviews your applications, infrastructure, and processes against a specific business challenge. It covers cloud configuration, security or compliance audits, and data and integration issues, and recommends whether to adopt an off-the-shelf product, extend your current systems, or build custom. It runs in three steps: we align on the business need, our technical experts assess your systems, and you receive a written report of findings and recommendations. It's free, and part of JBS Dev's Quick Launch Lab program.

  • Digital Transformation Assessment

The Digital Transformation Assessment helps you judge whether your organization is ready for a large technology change, such as a companywide platform or a major integration. It looks at the problems that sink adoption: unclear goals, steep learning curves, high costs, slow implementations, tools that don't integrate, and weak support after launch. The goal is a data-driven, organization-wide plan that raises adoption. It's part of JBS Dev's Quick Launch Lab program; contact us for format and timing.

HOW IT WORKS

How the Assessment Runs

  1. STEP 1

    Request

Tell us about the business problem or goal. We confirm fit, agree on the use cases to explore, and schedule time with your team.

  2. STEP 2

    Discovery

JBS Dev experts work with your team to identify the highest-potential AI uses, check data readiness, and plan how AI would fit your systems.

  3. STEP 3

    Proof of concept

Through rapid prototyping, we build one high-impact use case so you can see it working in your scenario, not a generic demo.

  4. STEP 4

    Results review

We present the prototype, the feasibility analysis, projected outcomes, and a roadmap with the technical and organizational requirements to reach production.

  5. STEP 5

    Next steps

You decide what happens next: a project with us, a different partner, or no build at all. There's no obligation to continue.

Who should attend

Plan on two people from your side: someone who owns the business problem and someone who knows the systems and data involved. Their time is concentrated in discovery and the results review, and we'll agree on the schedule before we start.

PRIVATE EQUITY

For Private Equity Portfolio Companies

Portfolio companies assess AI readiness to find value they can create within the hold period, without funding projects that won't pay back in time.

JBS Dev has worked with 12 portfolio companies of one mid-market PE firm. For a portfolio company, the assessment applies the same test to every use case: will it pay for itself, and how soon? That makes it easier to compare opportunities across the portfolio and fund the ones that return value fastest. When a deal is still in progress, technology due diligence comes first. After close, the assessment helps shape the AI part of the value creation plan. See Private Equity.

NEXT STEPS

What Happens After the Assessment

Most assessments end one of three ways: the proof of concept grows into a production build, a different fix turns out to be better, or the answer is "not yet." We'll tell you plainly when AI isn't the answer, or when a BI job, a simple rule, or an off-the-shelf product will do. When the answer is yes, the usual next steps are AI Agent Development, AI & Business Process Automation, or Machine Learning Consulting & Development.

WHY JBS DEV

How to Choose an AI Readiness Partner

Four questions to ask before you choose AI readiness assessment services, and how we answer them.

Will they tell us if AI isn't the answer?
Yes. Every use case gets the same test, whether it will pay for itself, and we say so when the answer is no or not yet.
Who runs the assessment?
Senior engineers who build these systems, not a separate strategy team.
Do we leave with something usable?
Yes: a prototype, a feasibility analysis, projected outcomes, and a roadmap, with no obligation to continue.
Who does the work?
Senior US-based engineers lead our builds, with nearshore support available for ongoing work.

JBS Dev is a senior-led custom software development company, founded in 1999, that builds, modernizes, and integrates enterprise systems around the technology clients already own.

FAQ

AI Readiness Assessment FAQs

What is an AI readiness assessment?

An AI readiness assessment is a structured review of whether your goals, data, systems, security, and people are ready to put AI into production. Through use case prioritization, it identifies which AI use cases to start with and which to skip. Ours ends with a proof-of-concept demonstration, a feasibility analysis, projected outcomes, and an implementation roadmap.

How long does the assessment take?

It depends on the format and the use case. The Generative AI Assessment runs in three steps, discovery, a proof of concept, and a results review, and its length depends on the use case chosen. Workshop formats, such as an AI strategy workshop, run about half a day. We confirm the schedule when we scope it.

What does it cost?

The Generative AI Assessment and the Technology Assessment are free as part of JBS Dev's Quick Launch Lab, and other Quick Launch Lab sessions are free for qualifying organizations. There's no obligation to continue afterward. If you need a larger or customized assessment, we'll scope and quote it before any work starts.

What do we need to prepare?

Bring a business problem, not a technology wish list. Have someone who owns that problem and someone who knows the systems and data involved available for discovery. Sample data or documents help with the proof of concept, and we'll agree on exactly what's needed before anything is shared.

Is an AI strategy workshop the same as an assessment?

Not quite. An AI strategy workshop is a half-day, conversation-first AI workshop to work through a business challenge and where AI could help. The assessment goes further, with discovery, a proof of concept, and a results review that ends in a roadmap. Many teams start with the workshop and move on to the assessment.

What if the assessment says we're not ready?

Then you'll know exactly why, and what to fix first. A "not yet" usually points to missing data, a system that can't be reached, or a use case that won't pay back. We'll say so plainly, and the roadmap shows what would change the answer. Sometimes a simpler fix, like a BI job or an off-the-shelf tool, is the right call.

Does our data leave our environment during the assessment?

Not outside your control. We agree up front on what data the assessment needs, and sample data stays in your environment or under enterprise AI agreements that bar providers from training on or retaining it. We apply the same controls you use for email: company licenses only, never personal accounts.
